Boat My Way Skipper Gethyn Owen
http://www.goangling.co.uk/
8 Members of MSA PW MC KC GD JS CS JA JF fished out of Holyhead aboard My Way with Skipper Gethyn Owen, Gethyn as usual greeted us with a fresh brew and biscuits , what a guy
We missed out on our Smoothhound trip last year due to poor weather and this time around it wasn’t looking to good but Gethyn was confident he could get us out
We brought forward the sailing time to 8:00 am to try and beat the wind forecast for later in the day but as we tried to get to the mark the sea was a bit rough with wind against tide.
Gethyn suggested a few hours in the bay to wait for the sea to ease off so we turned round and anchored closer to the breakwater.
We soon had bites with small codling first to show these were soon followed by a nice nodder for young Mark Costello fishing at the back of the boat.

He soon had a nice 7lb 4 oz Female Thornback on the boat which was weighed Photographed and returned.

Jim with a Male Thornback
Fishing continued with some nice Bullhuss into double figures, Dogfish were on the prolific side as well.

The tide was easing and the wind dropping and Gethyn decided on a move to try for the Smoothhounds
We anchored and sent our Peeler crab baits on 5/0 hooks to 40lb nylon down to the seabed to send out their sent trails and draw in the Smoothhounds
John had a bite more or less as he hit bottom but failed to contact the fish.
First to hook a Smoothhound was Jim who landed a nice fish of around 8 lbs

John Settle then had a good bite and a good tustle before bringing a monster Smoothhound to the top which was very lively, Gethyn did the business with the net and it was huge

We prepared the weighing sling and the fish was weighed three times to make sure of the weight

It weighed in at a fantastic 24 lbs 12 ozs only a pound of the Welsh record, it was photographed and retuned as were all of our Hounds

More fish followed to all aboard with a nice fish of 17 lbs 4 ozs to ken and a 15 lb Common

Smoothhound to Paul

and a 15 Starry to Graeme

John (The Sausage) Cheryl and young mark were also in to the Smuts

Occasional Codling and lots of dogfish and a few Huss rounded off the day
not
This Baby Huss was not long out of the egg but they all count

The fishing had been great and the food excellent with sausage and Bacon sarnies keeping us going
We had landed 10 Smoothhounds and missed a few as well
We were back in to Holyhead for 4:00 and home for 6:30
Thanks Gethyn for another great day out.
Cheers
Mstangler
