Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers - National Boat Team Qualifiers

The last weekend of June saw the WFSA bring the first 2 qualifying legs for the National Boat team to Holyhead Bay. There are 4 legs in total that see anglers from all over Wales competing for the privilege of representing Wales on the international angling arena. With 10 team places and 2 reserve places available in the squad, competition would be high.

Having been part of the National Team for 6 years, it is a very proud moment for a true Welshman to qualify into this team and it is also testimony to the hard work and dedication they all have.

The trials are also an excellent learning curve for anglers who have not only aspirations of making the National Team, but also those wanting to learn more on rigs, bait preparation and tactics from a fishy fun weekend.

Where as the speed of an anglers catch rate is important, his/her ability to catch a variety of species over different types of ground is equally as critical.

Each day is planned over 3 different styles of fishing :-

2hrs at anchor over mud or sand

2hrs at anchor over rough ground and fast tide

2hrs on the drift

Bait for the 6hrs consisted of 6 whole mackerel, 1 box of squid, 2 packs of sandeel and 1/2lb of ragworm.

The angler needs to show and all round ability and would certainly be tested on rigs, species, bait conservation and also catch rate.

Day One

3 Holyhead charter boats, Coegfran, My Way and Spindrift were utilised to take the 19 keen anglers out into the bay for the battle!

The weather for the day was to be relatively calm seas with a gentle 12mph SE breeze. All the fish had to be of a minimum 20cm in size. All boats carried an independent steward who would record each anglers catch on a clearly visible display board, with the skipper assisting in measuring any fish that were deemed possibly undersize.

The in-size fish would be awarded points from 1,2 and 3 - with the lowest scoring being the most prominent for Holyhead or simply the smaller fish for the area.

The fishing was brisk for most of the competitors, with a great variety of fish coming over the gunwales of each boat.

Species over the six hours included dabs, codling, whiting, dogfish, pouting, poor cod, grey and red gurnard, huss, thornback ray, blonde ray, spotted ray, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse and pollack.

Once the results were compiled for day one :-

Day Two
Day two of the team trials was always one laden with concern for the skippers. Strong winds forecasted to reach 35mph from the south! So a slight change in plan was needed to keep the anglers on a fairly consistent amount of fish.

The first 90mins on the mussel beds was hard going, fish were coming aboard however as the winder gathered pace and the tide slackened off, the boat was starting to rock in a very uncomfortable manner.

Despite the conditions, aboard My Way, Phil Clarke, a boat winner from the previous day fished well claiming 3 rays and a couple bull huss amongst his tally for the Mussel beds. After the full 2hrs had been fished, we had winds gusting 30knots against a 29ft ebbing tide and a call for cover was made. Getting the lads to sort gear, hide bait away, and huddle to the cover of the cabin, we ploughed through the sea to the shelter of Holyhead Mountain. It was certainly not safe to cut bait through the water as we hit a few waves and threw water over the boat. Arriving at Rocky Coast fishing was to continue on the rocky / broken ground. An anchor on the mud was sadly not a possibility as it was far too exposed to the Southerly wind.

On arrival we allowed an additional 20minutes preparation time for that lost whilst travelling through the rough sea. After which we were again into similar fish to the Mussel beds, however the fish were far less obliging as in the previous anchor, with a mixture of dogs, whiting, codling and some more huss coming to the boat.

Sadly, the winds had us pushed safely into the Rocky Coast area of Holyhead Bay, without any chance of venturing further a field for our 2hrs of drifting. By now, (end of June), this area is full of ballan, cuckoo and corkwing wrasse. However similar to reports from all over the UK, all the fishing seems to be a month or so behind. Yes wrasse and pollack are around, but nowhere near the numbers we are  normally seeing.

The anglers worked hard on the drift to record a fair number of wrasse and a few pollack in very difficult circumstance, not only were the fish proving elusive but the continuous strong wind was hampering any drift that wasn't tucked within a few feet of the rocks.
