Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers - National Boat Team Qualifiers

The trials are an excellent learning curve for anglers who have not only aspirations of making the National Team, but also those wanting to learn more on rigs, bait preparation and tactics from a fishy fun weekend.

Having been part of the National Team for 6 years, it is a very proud moment for a true Welshman to qualify into this team and it is also testimony to the hard work and dedication they all have.

Legs 3 & 4 soon came around for the anglers and a place in the 2011 team was still up for grabs from most placings1

Once again each day is planned over 3 different styles of fishing :-

2hrs at anchor over mud or sand

2hrs at anchor over rough ground and fast tide

2hrs on the drift

Bait for the 6hrs consisted of 6 whole mackerel, 1 box of squid, 2 packs of sandeel and 1/2lb of ragworm.

The angler needs to show and all round ability and would certainly be tested on rigs, species, bait conservation and also catch rate.

Sadly the weather played a good hand in spoiling our plans for the last 2 days. Never the less, all the anglers worked hard to catch a number of fish and species. Some may say that a good match is where there is an abundance of fish to be caught. But days like these, when you have to scratch around for every bite - certainly helps sort out your angling!

Day Three

Species over the six hours included dabs, codling, whiting, dogfish, pouting, poor cod, grey and red gurnard, huss, thornback ray, blonde ray, spotted ray, smoothhound, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse and pollack.

Once the results were compiled for day one :-

Boat winners on 100% Jon Law, Colin Orme Thomas and joint winners Brian Moss and Rod Adamson

Anyone interested in taking part in the 2011 WFSA National Boat Teams trials for the 2012 team should keep an eye out for information at the WFSA website - www.wfsa.org.uk . Watching the guys this weekend ...  I got the bug bag, thinking next year I'll be back to taking part... and hopefully qualifying!
