Tope
fishing is one of the most exciting aspects of our sport. Rigs out,
clutch set, ratchet on - sitting in anticipation of the ratchet
screaming, the reel paying line out as a large tope runs off
with your baited hook.
That's the easy bit - now you have to land the fish! |
|
| Rigs
are fairly straight forward for tope fishing. They can either incorporate
single hooks or 2 hooks rigged pennel style. The hooks are tied to a trace
of between 4 and 6ft in length of 100 - 150lb nylon. some people crimp the
nylon, personally I prefer to tie the hook and swivel on. |

| BAITS |
Rig examples |
| Mackerel,
herring, Eel section, dabs. Where
as you often here about mackerel flappers, my proffered method is to fish
a single whole or half mackerel. All around the north Wales coast we have
an abundance of dogfish, keeping bait whole helps to keep the dogfish and
huss away from your baits. |

| METHOD |
| Uptide,
across tide or downtide all work well when tope fishing. At Holyhead, when
we fish for tope in numbers at Holyhead Deep we are fishing in 150ft to
180ft of water. Neap tides are essential on this mark, as the tide can
steam through like a freight train. Main point here is to ensure that your
bait is anchored firmly to the ground, and presented correctly for the
tope to take. Rigs will vary in length depending on the strength of tide.
