Greater
spotted dogfish or as they are most commonly known bull huss, can
either come out of the water like a 'sack of spuds' or give you an
exciting fight.
Generally they can be caught whilst fishing for dogs, conger,
ling etc or other rough ground inhabitants.
Where numbers allow you can target bull huss. |
|
| To
target a fish a simple running ledger rig, of 60lb nylon tied to between a
3/0 and 6/0 hook will suffice. I tend to fish large baits, thus helping
keep the dogfish at bay. By the time the doggie has snapped the bait up,
usually a huss has come along and beaten it to the food. In a competition
when looking for huss in numbers a good strong rig of around 80lb nylon
can be used to present 2 or 3 hooks.
Dogfish themselves are attracted by sent which is why mackerel fresh or
old tends to get the fish, however with the bull huss I have found that
colour seems to attract the fish better. Good white squid baited whole or
whiting will more often than not out fish mackerel. |

Muppets, beads or equivalent are often added just above the hook to entice
the fish. |
