RIGS
Many anglers hate dogfish. some because they are plagued by them - others because they can't catch what must be the most prolific fish in our waters. Sea angling can often be very un-predictable, on that windy day when you cannot get to the mark you wanted - what's left? The humble doggie.

With light gear for a bit of sport even the dogfish can give you some fun.

There are many different rigs that anglers use for doggies. Some prefer plain and simple rigs with no attractors. Some prefer plenty of beads of differing colours. Personally I have 2 rigs that I use the most often. both contain yellow attractor beads.
Both rigs are 3-hook flowing, that are ledgerd hard on the sea bed. Dogfish come to static baits, often I'll fish heavy or grip leads to keep these rigs on the bottom.

BAITS
All fish baits - mackerel, sand ell, squid, herring, however dogfish are scavengers and will take most baits presented on a hook. However it is fairly safe to say that dogfish will attack most baits they see / smell.

Not just presentation but bait preparation can be a great advantage.

METHOD
I am a firm believer that dogfish hunt initially by smell, and only when they home in on a bait do attractors tempt them to your offering first. There are days when fresh mackerel will fish best, others frozen, and others mancky old rotting mackerel will work best. Most dogfish will come to a stationary bait, sometimes if bites are slow it pays to lift your bait gently off the bottom before dropping back down again.
