Finally the last leg of the boat league was upon
us, and with a reduction in numbers, only My Way was used for
the match. With Chris and Gareth P going for Gold, and both Jon Law and Pete Minns looking to knock Dafydd Bach’s percentage down and snatch a win to claim third spot, it was going to be a hard fought day afloat. With westerly gales on the horizon the weather gods had looked down on us and we left the marina with calm seas and a light northerly breeze. First mark was to be on the fast tides of the mussel beds, in search of dogs and huss. After only a few minutes it became apparent that the whiting were about in great numbers; Jon law lifting into a treble shot straight away. Without much thinking all rods changed tact a little from the initial targets and set about bagging up on the whiting, with only 20 allowed it was hopefully going to be a quick bag full. After a while though they thinned out a little with only Jon making the mark, so attention was turned back to dogs and a possible huss. If we were pleasure fishing I’m sure the dogs would have been in great numbers, but where are the little sods when they’re required? The huss proved elusive as well, and as the tide started to rip through and 1 ½ lb of lead was required, my anchor tripped as if to signal time to move and a go at drifting. Arriving at the Bolivar it was going to be hard work, with a near 2 knot drift and no sign of the pot buoys, I’m glad I was only scoring. Needless to say many rigs and leads were lost long the way, but in the end it was worth it. After a barren first few minutes, the lads got going with a few pollack, then a few more, then a few more. Not hand over fist, but 6 or 7 a drift and a few double shots spread fairly evenly around the boat. The range of pollack was very good for our inshore work, with the range being between 1 and 4lb, with the average being 2 ½ to 3lb, good fish and some exciting points and movement on the leader board. Chris and Jon law bagging up with around 12 a piece. The odd ballan also showed up along with a few poor cod, with Gareth P also bagging a sea scorpion, that he calmly photographed for the species hunt............ sad!! After an hour of hard work on the drift, a little calm was called for and a move to anchor on the mud to finish the dog quota off, mixed in with a few bits and pieces. Well that was a sorry move, where the hell have all the dogs gone? We should’ve been there yesterday – plenty then!! After just over an hour of the odd dog, whiting and poor cod the last move of the day was upon us, and this was to a favourite drift mark of mine – chair rock. It didn’t disappoint, plenty of wrasse – ballans, cuckoos and corkwings to all rods. Well except Chris’. After a good drift on the pollack, the wrasse seemed to elude Chris and as Jon and Gareth slowly sneaked away from him, poor old Chris could only watch, swear and wimper. However on My Ways portside, Pete Minns was making great strides towards first place for the day, “ballan for Pete, cuckoo for Pete, ballan for Pete”. With the wrasse drying up for Jon, a little longer may have seen Pete sneak off with the days victory walk, To coin a phrase, it’s a marathon not a sprint, and with consistent fishing throughout the day, Jon Law came through to secure first place with 230 points from Pete’s 198. Well done Jon, a little compensation for Wigan spanking City today! |

It was a case now of having to total all the
scores up and work out the percentages, then see how it all
affected the league table. With the percentages added up and entered into the table, confirmation was there that Gareth P had won the league, with Chris in second place and Dafydd Bach in third. |

Congratulations Gareth, you can’t be
consistently lucky fella, those 8/0 scratch rigs appear to be
the way forward. I would like to thank everyone that took part in the worlds longest running 6 match boat league and put two fingers up to the weather gods that said it couldn’t be done. All the matches where fished with high spirits and certainly a little micky taking. I enjoyed them all, thanks. Many thanks to Gareth at Fishing 4 U, who donated 3 Shimano Hyperloop rods for the top three spaces. Many thanks also to Gareth Spindrift, who alongwith myself part sponsored the boat league, resulting in all the cash prizes awarded. 1st Gareth P £120.40 + Shimano Rod 2nd Chris Hamblin £76.25 + Shimano Rod 3rd Dafydd Bach £44.25 + Shimano Rod |
