Fish Identification - Gurnard Tub

The Tub is the most common and largest of the Gurnard species commonly found around the UK.

The Tub Gurnard is a reddish brown colour on the upperside, changing to white underneath.

It has 2 dorsal fins, the first is large with protruding spines, the second a smaller and similar to the anal fin.

The lower three rays of the pectoral fins are separate, finger-like rays that contain sensory organs, that the gurnard uses to feel for food in sand and sediment.

It has 2 large pectoral fins, of which the tips are a blue in colour.

Tubs are commonly a bottom dwelling species that can be found in waters up to 300foot deep.

Tubs tend to be caught over muddy and sandy ground and feast on a variety of sea creatures.

Best tactics for anglers include scratch rigs in the 2up/1down build baited with mackerel or a ragworm and mackerel combination.
