It lives in shallow water on mainly rocky ground.

The Tompot has one large dorsal fin, and 2 large pectoral fins.

On the dorsal fin, the first part is spiny with the remainder soft to touch.

A dark brown and orange colour, the Tompot is easily distinguishable fro mother mini species by the 2 lappets over the eyes.

Best tactics for catching are small hooks, such as size 10, with finely cut pieces of worm or mackerel.

Small sabiki style shrimp rigs are often used to great effect by species anglers.

Also found down the side of breakwter walls, or around the legs of piers and similar jetty's.
