Sponsored Boat Fishing event 31st August 2007

As boat anglers I think it is fair to say, that the vast majority of us, charter skippers and pleasure skippers alike, set sail having taken all precautions, safety checks, courses etc possible. Along with ensuring our boats are fully equipped and compliant with all the safety equipment necessary for a safe and risk free day afloat.

Despite having taken every precaution necessary, sometimes things go wrong. The weather turns unpredictably dangerous, someone is injured, or something happens to our vessel that requires immediate attention.

Who do we turn to?

I don’t think it’s too presumptuous of me to say that we all set sail safe in the knowledge that a watchful eye and ear is around in the form of the local coastguard and lifeboat stations. Heaven forbid that anyone reading this should ever require the assistance of the local RNLI, but at the end of the day they are there should we need them. Come rain, shine or gale force winds and in weather that most of us often dismiss as being miserable and unappealing these individuals set sail to the assistance of the unfortunate sailor and angler.

On 06th July 2007, anglers aboard charter boats My Way and Spindrift will be taking part in a sponsored fishing event in aid of Holyhead and Trearddur Bay lifeboat appeal. The anglers involved are being sponsored to catch and release more fish in the day than the opposing boat. With each angler agreeing to a minimum of £100 sponsorship each, and the charter boats free of charge, it is hoped that a minimum of £2000 will be raised by the event, which is likely to become and annual bash. Sailing from Holyhead Marina at 9am, the boats will be returning to the Marina at around 5.pm.Afterwhich there will be an official presentation to RNLI personnel in front of Holyhead Lifeboat Station.

Sponsored fishing although appealing, may lack a little in the fun stakes; which is why, as part of the event the anglers along with Gareth and myself have agreed to dress as pirates for the full 8hrs. Now I don’t necessarily see myself as Captain Jack Sparrow, however I can certainly see Gareth as Captain Pugwash!

Sponsors and donations are being sought to help increase the total amount of cash raised on the day. If you would like to donate, however small please send a cheque or postal order made payable to ‘Anglesey Boat Festival, to the following address:
